To re-write existing source code in order to improve its readability or structure without affecting its meaning or behaviour
Wikitonary
At work I’ve been having to edit some old code, and make it work in new ways.. In the process I have found a lot of poorly structured code, and poor variables names. I have found it surprising how much I have enjoyed making small changes to make it more readable. There is something to lovely about improving something, and knowing the next time I need to make a change it will be that much easier.
About stuff
Sitting at the moment in a funky Cafe/Bar called the “Lounge” looking out onto the ever Swanston St. I have decided to break my journey home today, and relax or perhaps do some work before heading on home.
Anyway I’ll give you a short update on what’s been happening:
Had a free corporate breakfast today at Crown Casino. Basically in exchange for listening to an hour talk on a problem to do with IT, and one vendors wonderfully unique solution you get a very nice breakfast. My only problem was this morning being half asleep I was both late and directionally challenged. I tried to get off at Flagstaff a stop I didn’t know and then run over to Spencer St to grab a tram, saving me the long trip around the City Loop. The only problem was I walked for a block in the wrong direction when I got out. I really don’t know past Londsdale St very well, and had no bearings.
Had a very short trip to Sydney over the weekend. It was for my Grandparents 60th wedding anniversary. Quite an accomplishment in this day and age.
I also got to catch up with Lesley and Sam which was nice. Wish I could of seen more people, but there is only so much time available on trips.
Last week Mil and Martin were down which was rather lovely. I am glad they didn’t get to see everything they wanted because that means they have to come again ;-).
About stuff
Two stories this past week have been coming into me.
1) Floods in Bihar, devestating impacts. EHA who I worked with for 18 months are doing some relief work. Read more on their website. TEAR should be putting up an appeal soon will provide a link when it comes through.
I used to live in this state. Though not where the flooding has hit. I know people who are/will be working in the relief effort.
2) The rising violence against Christians in Orrisa. TEAR has some information here
