The 10 Most Underreported Humanitarian Crises of 2006

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

MSF has done a report on the top 10 under reported Crises of 2006. Have a look at it here.

How many of these stories did you hear about?

I think I can claim about five out of ten, and knowing about at least two of them came directly from me living in India.

Gates Foundation

Monday, January 8th, 2007

This is an interesting investigation into the Gates foundation. It shows how much of it’s money is being used to invest in companies with questionable ethics. I wonder if this is that surprising based on how Gates and Buffet originally got their money. Is it all a farce?

Freedom and Liberation

How many people do you need to kill to be free.
I am tired of people killing in the name of freedom.

How does the murder of civilians help anyone be free.

Where is our Ghandi, or Martin Luther King or our Nelson Mandela??

The world needs strong voices of peace and heroes to rally behind. What good are hospitals when people are being slaughtered just for being in the wrong place?

We need that great dead man to wake up and come again.

Saturday Night

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Some Saturday Night’s aren’t very exciting. I am spending this one working on documentation for the project. I only have 20 working days left in Nagaland, and that’s with a 6 day week. Found out my servers are meat to be coming on Wednesday. The big UPS also comes then, meaning I should be able to run multiple computers at once, which is important for testing. The other equipment should arrive some time before I leave.

If you are a geek with absolutely nothing worth doing you can check out the google code project for the software Wes has written here. I’ve been doing some documentation on the Wiki, very tedious work I must say.

At least my MacBook is very nice to use, and I have a good iTunes collection to keep me entertained.

In related news it’s only 50 days until I get home.

Good Day

Friday, January 5th, 2007

Today was a good day. I got up this morning to find two nice emails from friends in my Inbox and to see that Australia had won the Ashes 5-0. I then went and got some breakfast and my morning coffee and went about replying to the emails. I like writing personal emails. I then eventually got into doing some work but ended up feeling a bit uninspired. I decided to go for a walk into Dimapur town and get some chow. I had some good chow whilst working on my laptop and then headed back via my favourite bakery to pick up some muffins.

On my way back I decided I wanted to do some English teaching courses, and had a bit of look online for them. I felt a bit guilty about not doing more work so I did a google and found an awesome page on MySQL replication and failover. Suddenly things started clicking and I have finally got my high availability database problem solved. Now I just need to setup load balancing.

Tonight there should be a good movie on cable, if the power stays on. I know Friday Night’s in Dimapur aren’t very exciting. 26 Days until I leave Dimapur and get back to Delhi. A land of coffee shops, cinemas, safe night outings, and some friends.
