War

June 12th, 2006

According to US Officials, 3 suicides at Guantanamo Bay were actually acts of war.

I’m wondering now about the implications of being able to claim suicide as an act of war. If I was overseas in the US and I killed myself (without injuring anyone else) would that be an act of war. Would that enable the US to declare war on my country.. hmmm..

In Australia with our suicide rate I think we might have a civil war going on. 100’s of people commiting acts of war.

I am sick of this manipulation of the English language, though I do enjoy doing it myself.

War is peace
hate is love

And in the general hardening of outlook that set in … practices which had been long abandoned … — imprisonment without trial, the use of war prisoners as slaves, public executions, torture to extract confessions, the use of hostages and the deportation of whole populations — not only became common again, but were tolerated and even defended by people who considered themselves enlightened and progressive.

George Orwell 1984.

Orwell, Monty Python, and The Onion. That’s who I’ve seen numerous bloggers liken this to this morning. Frankly, I don’t want to live in a world where I can’t tell the difference between 1984 and a BBC headline.

Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and a few other NGOs, have designated June Torture Awareness Month. We’ve created a blogroll you can join if you’re interested. You can find it here. The idea is that everyone is linked to from the blogroll, and in exchange, you discuss torture (as you already do), and link to the Torture Awareness site to help support the NGOs.

There’s a lot of bloggers who are angry about human rights abuse in the War on Terror. If we coordinate, we can show our support and help Amnesty and HRW make Torture Awareness Month a success.

“An act of assymetrical warfare against us” ??!!

    “A good PR move” ??!!

They have got to be kidding. This is the US public relations response to three suicides of illegally detained, un-charged, hostages - held beyond the scope of any meaningful legal process??!!

The Independent has a bit more on the story.
