Reverse Birthday Presents

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Our cleaning lady came today. When she found out it was my birthday first she wanted 500Rs and then she decided she wanted a mobile phone with a camera.. It was very funny. I am pretty she was just having fun with us.. We all laughed a lot anyway. Wes and I kept saying did she want phone number, or cake, or 5Rs. I wish I had my video camera setup to capture some of these classic moments..

Before when communicating birthday she did a little dance and sung a song it was very funny. No one has sang me happy birthday this year yet. Oh well, can’t say that makes me very unhappy.

Most Forgetable Birthday

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Well yesterday was my birthday and I’ll have to admit it was pretty forgetable.

I awoke in the wee hours of the morning to deal with my birthday present from the little Indian parasites inside my stomach. At this stage I decided to check my emails to see if anyone had sent me a birthday email, and two people had. I listened to some more music and eventually faded back into sleep. The present required my attention throughout the morning leaving me feel somewhat drained.

I ended up spending most of the day reading a book and watching TV and generally not doing much. I didn’t even leave my house.

Thanks to everyone who sent me birthday emails, blog posts and SMS’s. I have to say that I am amused at the difficulty people have when it comes to time zones. For the record India at the moment is a simple 4.5 hours behind Sydney. The only time I am not on the same day as Sydney is from midnight to 4.30am Sydney time.

Hard done by

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

I think that Australia was a recipient of dodgy calls from the referee in the match last night.
The moral outrage though in the Australian press is amusing me.
Why is it that my country can get so upset about an injustice which stops us from receiving more sporting glory, whilst around the world billions suffer due to daily injustice that Australia is complicit in?
Where is the outrage about the injustice suffered by the poor?

Who are you?

I am wondering who reads this blog. Whilst I have statistics software, it seems that I get a lot of hits from spam bots, footboot and google.

I have some idea from the comments people leave, but if you haven’t commented in a while or ever please do leave a comment on this or another post, saying your name and where you are from.

Thanks,

David.

Agra Drinks

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

When we went to Agra I order three beverages, and every time I didn’t get what I ordered. First I ordered a Mango juice and got an orange juice, the second drink I ordered a Coco-cola and got a fresh lime soda, the 3rd drink I orded a mountain dew and got a sprite.. Sometimes India makes me laugh.

Taj

I took my camera this time to the Taj. You can look at the photos here

Hot and Tired

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

Went to the Agra Fort and the Taj today. So hot, June is not a good time for visiting these places. If you ever want to study the most effective and highest presure sales techniques a trip to the Taj is a must. I’ll write more about the day latter, not in a big writting mood now as I got up at 4.00am and I am planing on staying up for the soccer which finishes at 2.30am.

The real problem here is that I am almost out of good coffee.

Vulnerability

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

I find it interesting some days when I see clearly both the darkness and the light within me.

I have also been wondering about the defences I have, and whether I be more vulnerable. I think the answer is probably yes. It’s interesting too how much easier I find some people (usually women, but not always) to share things with. I think that says more about the way men generally communicate with other men and all the stupid cultural expectations we place on ourselves. The whole concept of “manhood” is often a barrier to taking proper concern for people I think, but that is another rant.

Films about Justice

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

Just finished compiling a list of movies with social justice themes over at Take The Challenge you can have a look at the list here.

Well Played

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

Good on Australia, they played well. No shame in losing to the world champions the way they did last night.

Lost in translation

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

Sometimes I wonder how funny my conversations with out cleaning lady who comes twice a week would be to a viewer with subtitles. They are funny enough for me, with no comprehension of what is really being said.

So Smart

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

I am so smart SMRT I mean SMART.. I got my PABX working with outbound calls. The problem was so simple that it took hours to find.. It turned out my outgoing calls were being routed to a non-exisitant call group… Silly me.

My Own PABX

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

I have sucessfully setup a VOIP PABX (Phone System) with 3 extensions in my home using free software and a 2 special pieces of hardware. At the moment I can’t dial out but who needs that. I can receive calls from outside and voice mail working. Eventually the system will tell the cricket scores when someone dials “6″.

For those of you wondering what this has to do with poverty reduction, it’s about cost cutting and improving efficiency at the same time. I should be able to save the project a lot of money doing a homebrew PABX system.. I hope. And the cricket scores, well this is India.
