It’s been a year since I slept through the Tsunami, I never quite caught up to the magnitude of it all. Something about being jet lagged after getting home from India and reverse culture shock kind of made it so I never engaged with it. I wish I had been able to care more at the time.

Such is life I guess.

I went and so Joyeux Noel last night with Sam.

It is one of the best films I have ever seen. I think it is better then Life Is Beautiful. It tells the story of a cease fire on the front lines of World War I, in English, French and German. It’s one of those films that restores your faith in humanity. It showed the break down of hostilaties as the troops joined by music began to see that the enemy was just like them. The Scotish have their bagpipes, the Germans their singing and the French their wine.

The films tag line is Without an enemy there can be no war. So true.

I am thinking that I might make a tradition of watching this film every Christmas. It shows the real value of Christmas.

Anyway go out and see it!

I don’t think I am going to make 52 movies this year. I should see 48 though. Which would be like I was doing it for a job and I got my 4 weeks annual leave. Wonder how Tom is going.

Well what those results mean is that I now have finished the course work for my Computer Systems Engineering degree.

All that is left for me to get letters after my name is to do my thesis. However I won’t have time to do that until 2007 which means I won’t graduate until the start of 2008. *sigh*

Well I got a new record today for my Uni subjects.

97 for Professional Service Project (talking and writing about India) and for the robots I got 86. Both are High Distinctions which is always nice. Should boost my average a little.

Even if John Howard will not say it, 75% of voters in a recent Poll agree that Australia has underlying racism. There are other good finds in the poll which is refreshing.

Tonight was really good.

I am actually pretty damn yay Christmas. I love the excuse to be generous…

However Christmas is a really hard time of year. I really think that I need a little hole I can just escape from it all and hide in sometimes.

It’s stupid the way that our society has co-opted Christmas and made it about plastic smiles and false joy. I do think that there is joy in Christmas and that it is an important time to gather with family and friends. But for so many people this makes it a hard time of year. For so many people there is real saddness mixed in with the family and therefore Christmas experience. We live in a broken messed up world so this is no suprise to me.

I don’t know what I am trying to say here. Maybe just if you are blessed enough to not have issues this year with Christmas be thankful to God for that blessing and sensitive to others. If your family pisses you off at Christmas just be thankful that you can still see them. And if you can’t see all your family then I guess just look after the ones you can see.

Me I’ve become a bit of a jadded cynic. I hope I find the hope to again believe that what I’ve long desired for Christmas will actually come one year.

Somewhere in there all this I have to remember that God is there. Jesus lived in this crazy world of ours for 33 years and we are celebrating his coming.
